Ernst-Happel-Stadium Vienna becomes climate neutral
Overview
After first discussion over reconstruction of the Austrian Ernst-Happel-Stadium (Vienna) from the 1930s, its renovation started as of early 2024 instead, to comply with the protection of the landmark. The stadium will be transformed into a geothermal and solar energy power plant, which costs around €100 million. Thereby, the stadium will become emission neutral.
Technical Data
The geothermal installation will consist of 270 wells, each 150 meters deep. Together with the photovoltaic installation, the geothermal installation is expected to produce 4,377 MWh per year, exceeding the stadium's needs. The overproduction, around 800 MWh, shall be used for the close-by swimming pool. The entire renovation is supposed to finish by 2026.
